An endangered giant green sea turtle swims across this contemporary photo frame.

This piece is based on a series of photos I took off the Big Island of Hawaii a few years ago. Giant green sea turtles are a protected species, and there are large areas where fishing is prohibited (except in some cases for the native Hawaiians) so sea life is plentiful. You can often see the turtles lying on the beach, people stepping carefully around them. On land they are rather awkward but in the water they become quite graceful, diving and soaring among the fish and coral. I love swimming with these guys!

I try to capture the grace of this beautiful creature as he glides along. I wanted to show a different angle than is often presented in turtle art, more of a side view as if you were swimming right beside him.
